Nikon has invented a new kind of DSLR to add on their line of digital SLR, the 6.1-megapixel compact entry level D40 DSLR. This new Digital SLR left some features of the D50 and gain some features of the D80. It has a three area AF sensor, 3d color matrix metering II, custom Auto ISO, 2.5 fps continuous shooting and camera retouching. The Nikon D40 combines an outstanding picture quality with a smart, lightweight and compact design that will attract everyone. Here are the specifications of the new D40.
• Body color – it only come with the professional look, in low-key black color. 18.485 oz. or 524.1 grams actual measured weight with memory card and battery but without the strap, lens or cap cover. Nikon enumerate 16.8 oz or 475 grams weight of the D40 but with no battery, memory card LCD cover or body cap.
• D40 Lenses – some lens won’t automatically focus in the D40 body, lenses that have internal motor will auto focus. Interchangeable lens camera.
• 3008 x 2000 maximum resolution and 2256 x 1496, 1504 x 100 is its lowest resolution.

• Convenience modes – Auto, Auto with flash off, portrait, landscape, kid, sports, close-up and night portrait.
• Flash capability – D40 uses Nikon’s good I - TTL system like D80, D2X, D200 with SB-600 and SB800. The built-in flash will not function as a remote commander, for you to use it as a commander you need the SU-800.
• White Balance – it can be set on the usual Incandescent, Fluorescent, Direct Sunlight, Flash, Cloudy and Shade presets, and also in Auto WB and manual white or gray-card.
• ISO – 200 – 3,200 and Auto. Nikon marks the ISO 3,200 as letter “H” so that most people won’t use it because all experienced photographers know that 3,200 ISO is supposed to look grainy but most people don’t. The manufacturers hide this very fast settings with a code so normal people won’t use them and will result to be unhappy with the grain and noise.
• Battery – new and advance 1,000 lithium-ion EN-EL9. Rated in about 470 shots and 50 percent flash. If used without flash it can handle more shots than anyone who uses this camera could shoot in a day.
