Wide-angle lens are lenses whose focal length is substantially shorter than the focal length of normal lens for the size of the image created by the camera whether is it dictated by the dimension of the image frame at the film plane for film cameras or dimensions of photo sensor for digital cameras. In still photography, lens that comes with the kit of the Nikon D40 is a standard 18-55mm lens kit particular format has a focal length equal to the length of the diagonal of the image frame.

Telephoto lens is a specific construction of long focal length photographic lens that settle its optical centre outside of its physical construction, such as the entire lens assembly in between the optical centre and the focal plane. These types of lens are best known for creating distant subjects appear magnified. Their effects are similar to moving closer to the subject, but are not the same, since perspective is a function solely of viewing location. Super telephoto lens is also the same as telephoto but its focal length has been upgraded.

Wide-angle zoom lens are a combination of wide-angle lens with a having a long focal length. These types of lens are mostly used for capturing still image in sports. High power zoom lens are lenses with unconventionally large focal length focus, typically more than 4 times and ranging up to 15 times, like 35mm to 350mm. While high power zoom lenses have improved greatly over the past years, they still have a couple of drawbacks in comparison with shorter-range zooms and prime lenses. The notable is the much growth likelihood of significant distortions of the image at both extreme ends of the range.

Close-up lens, the word close-up may give a hint of what close-up lenses are. Adding a close-up lens can bring the camera closer to its subject, making the image of the subject bigger. There are various good reasons why it is necessary to bring the camera closer to the subject. First, we may not be able to get that close when shooting some subject due to numerous reasons. Once we move back, the image size of the subject reduces. Second, it is not easy to get a desired composition and lighting set-up. Then again, moving back reduces the image size of the subject. And lastly, with close-up lenses we may achieve a higher magnification that what the macro mode can provide. If good quality of close-up lenses are being used you can obtain a very nice result.

There are different lens to choose from but first you need to decide if what your field of photography is, after that you may now what is the best lens for your Nikon D40.
